It was designed to improve fuel efficiency compared to the older C4 and C6 transmissions by adding a fourth gear (overdrive). The Ford AOD transmissions features a hydraulically controlled valve body, an integrated bellhousing, and a unique split-input torque converter shaft for direct mechanical lockup. Its gear ratios include 2.40:1 in first, 1.47:1 in second, 1.00:1 in third, and 0.67:1 in fourth (overdrive), with a reverse ratio of 2.00:1.
