700R4 Transmission

The 700R4 is a four-speed automatic transmission that General Motors introduced back in 1982. The reason for its introduction was General Motors to offer improved fuel economy and performance, especially with overdrive. This transmission was widely used in GM vehicles, trucks, and SUVs that are enhanced by the existence of its fourth overdrive gear and lockup torque converter for highway gas mileage. The various applications of these transmissions made it famous from the Chevy Corvette and Camaro as well as full-size trucks. 700R4 later progressed into 4L60 and 4L60E.

The 4L60E with its electronic control, provided enhanced precision in shifting. The 700R4 is quite popular for durability and aftermarket support, but if not upgraded accordingly, it can fade under heavy-duty and high-torque applications. Its performance can be enhanced with modifications for high-performance builds, making it a favorite in the aftermarket scene for muscle cars and trucks.
